An Overview Of Housing Quality Standards Inspections
Housing Quality Standards (HQS) inspections ensure that Housing Choice Voucher rental units are safe and livable. SCCHA suggests that the landlord and tenant walk through the home and note any broken or damaged items so that they can be fixed before the Housing Choice Voucher inspection. If the unit does not pass, all failed items must be repaired, and a new inspection may be necessary to verify repairs have been completed before the tenant moves in.

View Inspection ChecklistBefore Housing Choice Voucher holders move into a new home, we make sure the new home meets Housing Quality Standards. In order to pass Housing Choice Voucher inspection, the unit must be safe, clean and “move-in ready.” This means, among other things, the water, gas, and electricity are already turned on, the stove and refrigerator work, and the previous tenant’s belongings are gone. We advise program participants and landlords alike to ensure you have the basics covered by reviewing examples from our inspection guidelines found in our Housing Choice Voucher inspection checklist.
